As of 7 a.m’ Monday, .43 inches of rain had fallen. Spartanburg County voters will elect County Council members from individual districts in the general election next May. The single member district system was approved by voters in a March 13 referendum and was given final approval by the County Council last week. Quentin Anderson, public relations director for the AAA Carolina Motor Club recommended that motorists watch the prices they are paying at the gas pumps. Some gas stations have jumped prices as much as ten cents in recent days. “We recommend that motorists.... boycott the stations that jumped their prices," Anderson said. Some piice rises were predicted because of U.S. sanctions halting the flow of 610,000 barrels of Iraqi oil per day. Hal Dorset, spokesman for the N.C. Service Station Association, Continued On Back Page Chamber Board Meets Tryon Thermal Belt Chamber of Commerce board of directors will meet Wednesday, August 8 at 8 a.m. at the Chamber office for the purpose of electing officers. All board members are urged to attend. Correction The names of Joseph Breedlove Sr.’s surviving daughters were left out of his obituary Friday. They are Virginia Lee Arrowood Thelma Kate Johnson, both of Rutherfordton. Maryland Fugitive Arrested Sunday A 40-year-old man was in Polk County jail Monday awaiting extradition to Maryland after his arrest at the Tryon Post Office Sunday afternoon. Tryon Police officer Mike Lawing received a call Sunday about a suspicious person at the post office. He responded and the man there identified himself as Roger Denton. Lawing and officer Frankie Greene ran a check on Denton through the National Crime Information Center and found Denton was wanted on a probation v.olation in Maryland. He was taken into custody at that time on a “fugitive from justice" warrant and placed in the Polk County jail. Marji And Roma Coming To Polk Library Marji and Roma will be at Polk County Public Library this Thursday at 4:30. For those who have not been introduced to Marji and Roma. Marji performs original “sing a long” songs using a drum and keyboard and Roma, a silent clown, performs skits that make children laugh while enocuraging them to read! This is a special program that will be long remembered by children. Geared to elementary-age children, it is being enthusiastically received by libraries and schools. This special program culminates our series of summer storytimes at Polk Library. All children ages 3 and up are encouraged to join us for this exciting event. No prior attendance at storytime program is required. TFAC Developing Long Range Plans The Directors of the Tryon Fine Arts Center are excited about a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council which will partially cover the cost of a professional consultant. The consultant, Ms. Danelle Withrow, will work with them to establish long-range plans for the center. Ms. Withrow is based in Washington. D.C. as a Director of Programs for a consulting firm She has had over twenty years' experience working with the problems of arts coincils. museums and fine arts centers across the country. She plans to work with small groups of community people, TFAC supporters, and people active in area affairs, on Thursday, August 16 at the Center. Due to increased use of the TFAC facilities and to the anticipated growth of the entire area, TFAC directors think it is important to consider the role of the Center and how it can best serve the community in the coming decade.
